I started my career in traditional wealth management before joining one of the earliest robo-advisors. I’ve seen how managing money has evolved from in-person meetings and spreadsheets to mobile apps and automated investing, making it easier for people to track and grow their investments.

Now Perplexity, the AI-powered answer engine, is taking it to the next level with conversational insights. With their new Portfolio feature, people can securely connect their investment accounts through Plaid and turn their real holdings into an interactive financial management experience. Instead of piecing together performance across accounts, they can ask direct questions about their portfolio and get personalized answers in seconds.

This marks a meaningful step as financial services shifts to intelligent finance, where your data doesn’t just sit in an app or static interface, it informs AI experiences designed to respond to you. At Plaid, we believe that this is the future of financial services, and we are thrilled to partner with Perplexity on making that vision a reality.

Plaid enables users to securely link investment account holdings in Portfolio

How Portfolio delivers context-aware answers with Plaid

Plaid powers the Portfolio experience by allowing users to securely connect their brokerage accounts and share investment data across multiple institutions. Once connected, Perplexity uses Plaid’s Financial Insights APIs to access investments holdings, transactions, balances, and securities data across linked accounts, providing the context necessary to deliver personalized insights and portfolio-specific answers.

Users get a tailored dashboard that brings their portfolio into focus, complete with a daily AI-powered summary, detailed views into positions and performance, and risk factors identified by Perplexity.

Users can view a detailed analysis of their portfolio

To explore further, users can start a conversation and ask questions about their portfolio in plain language. A user might ask:

  • What is my exposure to domestic real estate?

  • How could the current macro environment in the U.S. affect my portfolio?

  • Should I consider adding another asset class to diversify risk?

Instead of interpreting charts on their own or combing through reports, users get clear explanations that help them learn, build confidence, and deepen their understanding of how their investments are performing. Portfolio is built for insight and does not place trades or move funds for a user.

Users can deepen their knowledge of their finances by asking questions in chat

Powering intelligent financial experiences

AI-driven financial experiences depend on purpose-built infrastructure, including access to real-time data and the context behind it. To provide meaningful answers, agents and chat interfaces need a holistic view of a user’s financial picture.

Today, more than half of Americans with a bank account have used Plaid to make nearly one million new connections each day. Through Plaid’s secure data infrastructure, builders and companies like Perplexity can get user-permissioned access to a variety of financial data, giving them the foundation to build products that help people better understand and manage their money.

Experiences like Portfolio show what’s possible when trusted financial data meets powerful AI. As financial services become more adaptive and responsive to each person’s financial situation, it demands greater accuracy, stronger signals, and less noise from underlying data. This is core to Perplexity’s mission to deliver accurate and reliable answers.

It also further fulfills Plaid’s mission to unlock financial freedom for everyone. When people get contextual answers grounded in their personalized financial data, they’re better equipped to make decisions that can move them forward.

I’m excited by the momentum behind intelligent finance and what it means for all of us trying to navigate our financial lives. Having seen the industry evolve firsthand, we’re getting closer to making financial guidance as easy as having a conversation.

If you’re building AI-powered financial experiences, we’d love to connect and explore how Plaid can support your team.
