What’s a consumer reporting agency?

A consumer reporting agency (CRA) gathers and evaluates information to provide consumer reports to lenders, property managers, and other financial service providers. Plaid Check is a CRA that shares people’s bank data (with their permission) to build fuller, more accurate consumer reports based on their real-time financial information.

What’s the difference between a Plaid Check report and a traditional credit score?

A traditional credit score is based mainly on nationwide credit bureau data—things like how much of your available credit you're using and how long you've had credit for. A Plaid Check report is a consumer report based on your connected bank account activity, including income, cash flow, and account history. Together, a traditional credit score and Plaid Check report can offer a more complete and current picture of your finances.

Why was I denied a loan?

Plaid Check provides consumer reports to third parties for their use in a credit decision. We do not make credit decisions and aren’t able to advise you on why you were, or were not, approved for a product you applied for. To get this information you’ll need to reach out to the company you applied to directly.

What’s the difference between Plaid and Plaid Check?

Plaid Inc. helps people securely connect their financial accounts to apps. Plaid Check (a separate, subsidiary company) is a consumer reporting agency and is responsible for the consumer rights described on this page. If you’re having trouble connecting to Plaid, get support here. Or, if you’d like to revoke access for Plaid, fill out this form.

What’s a consumer report?

A consumer report is information about you, such as your credit use, income, or employment, that's used by lenders and other service providers to help decide your eligibility for things like credit, insurance, or housing. Your report can only be provided for purposes permitted by law.
