Small UI Tweaks, Big Conversion Gains in Layer
In onboarding, the smallest details often make the biggest difference.
An extra tap. A vague word. Unclear expectations. These may seem minor, but each can spark a moment of hesitation and be the reason a user drops off. That’s why getting onboarding right is such a critical piece of the customer journey, and why companies invest millions into teams, research, and endless iteration, all in the hope of nudging conversion up by even a single percentage point.
Today, we’re sharing a few subtle but meaningful updates to the Layer experience. These changes have already driven a 5% relative lift in Layer conversion for customers, on top of the typical 5 to 25% conversion uplift teams already see with Layer. And the best part: there is no action required to realize these benefits.
Fine-tuning the Layer Experience
We understand the importance of making a great first impression. And that’s why we’ve continued to raise the standard for what great onboarding should feel like.
The latest update to Layer includes a set of thoughtful improvements that include:
New intro pane design & copy. Clear value framing for users when choosing to sign up instantly with Plaid, plus setting expectations for what to expect.
Refined UI throughout the flow. Spacing, corner radius, and microcopy refinements throughout the flow to create a smoother experience from sign-up to onboarded.
Swipe-down to exit. A familiar gesture that reduces “I’m stuck“ moments and reinforces user control in a modern, intuitive way.
Fewer timeouts, more completed sessions. Bug fixes and optimized timeout handling that reduce unintended session errors and increase successful completions.
These improvements were designed to feel invisible day-to-day, but meaningful at scale.
Boosting Conversion
Based on early testing with customers, we have seen a 5% uplift in Layer’s conversion rates, just by introducing these new improvements to users. These conversion improvements build on top of Layer’s industry leading conversion rate to squeeze even more value out for customers.
Small gains at the top-of-funnel compound. A few percentage points today can become thousands of additional customers over a quarter. Over time, that incremental uplift adds up and can drive meaningful downstream revenue. Creating user delight during onboarding doesn’t just ensure a good first impression, it can shift the trajectory of a business.
Sweating the details
Layer already reduces onboarding time by up to 87% compared to traditional flows. These new UI refinements and authentication improvements help convert even more trusted users, faster. And because Layer only appears when we know a user is eligible and likely to convert, these gains go straight to the bottom line.
The small stuff matters. That’s why we sweat the details, so you don’t have to.
