The Policy, Risk and Legal (“PRL”) team at Plaid works at the intersection of technology and financial services on disruptive innovations that require creative and pragmatic legal solutions. We deal with novel issues every day and work collaboratively across Plaid’s product, business, operations, risk and policy teams, as well as with our customers and partners. 

The PRL team is looking for a Product Counsel, Payments to advise and provide strategic direction to our product team, business team, and other key stakeholders on a wide range of issues related to payments. We’re looking for a collaborative team member with strong problem-solving skills who can manage multiple, high-priority projects in a fast-paced environment.

What excites you:

  • Serving as a subject matter expert for product, engineering, business teams and other stakeholders on laws and regulations applicable to payments.
  • Advising and supporting payments product teams on payments-related legal issues, risks, and opportunities, including the development and launch of payment products.
  • Monitoring and analyzing legal, regulatory, and policy developments relevant to payments and financial services, including related to data privacy, consumer protection, and financial and payments regulatory frameworks.
  • Advising on the design and development of payments compliance programs, in coordination with the Risk and Regulatory Compliance teams.

What excites us:

  • J.D. degree, with at least 8+ years of relevant experience at a top law firm, government agency, or in-house legal department, with a focus on payments laws and regulations.
  • Deep understanding of laws, regulations, and requirements applicable to payments, including money transmission laws, financial services regulations, anti-money laundering and Bank Secrecy Act, FinCEN regulations, know-your-customer requirements, and sanctions.
  • Strong familiarity with the Nacha Operating Rules (including the roles and responsibilities of third-party senders and third-party service providers), RTP Network Rules, and payment card network rules.
  • Experience negotiating, advising on, and managing the risks of complex commercial agreements with partner banks, payment processing vendors, and other payments-related service providers.
  • Strong interest in emerging payments technology and the payments industry.
  • Creative thinker who is comfortable interpreting and applying the law in unsettled contexts.
  • Highly collaborative and able to work effectively with a variety of cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strong project-management skills, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Good sense of humor.
  • Bar admission in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house counsel status) in the applicable state.
