Employment Counsel

New York / San Francisco | Full-time

We analyze complex and novel legal issues for Plaid to enable innovation.

At Plaid, our mission is to unlock financial freedom for everyone.  There has never been a better time than now to start building the future of fintech with us. Plaid powers the tools millions of people rely on to live a healthier financial life. We work with thousands of companies like Venmo and SoFi, several of the Fortune 500, and many of the largest banks to make it easy for people to connect their financial accounts to the apps and services they want to use. Plaid’s network covers 11,000 financial institutions across the US, Canada, UK and Europe. Founded in 2013, the company is headquartered in San Francisco with offices in New York, Salt Lake City, Washington D.C., London and Amsterdam.

The Policy, Risk and Legal (“PRL”) team at Plaid works at the intersection of technology and financial services on disruptive innovations that require creative and pragmatic legal solutions. We deal with novel issues every day and work collaboratively across Plaid’s product, business, operations, risk and policy teams, as well as with our customers and partners.

The PRL team is looking for an Employment Counsel to work closely on a day-to-day basis with Plaid’s People Team and provide strategic advice and counsel on a range of employment issues. We’re looking for a collaborative team member with an empathetic approach and who enjoys problem-solving and juggling multiple, high-priority projects in a fast-paced environment.

What excites you:

  • Partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to support execution of practical, scalable and compliant business strategies and solutions that impact Plaid’s team members.

  • Designing and implementing policies, programs, processes, and resources that help us to scale, including development of training materials, internal resources, templates, and playbooks on a range of topics.
  • Drafting and maintaining (and sometimes negotiating) global employment documents and policies, including offer letters / employment agreements, handbooks, code of conduct, separation agreements, etc.
  • Anticipating and proactively mitigating (by leveraging creative solutions and problem-solving) legal risks related to employment policies and decisions.
  • Monitoring legal and policy developments relevant to employment law and translating those developments into practical steps for the Company to action on.

What excites us:

  • J.D. degree, with at least 3-4 years of relevant legal experience at a law firm or in-house (in-house experience preferred, but not required).
  • Deep familiarity with US employment laws (preferably expertise in CA or NY laws) (experience with laws in non-US jurisdictions preferred, but not required).
  • Significant experience counseling on issues spanning the employee lifecycle (prior employment litigation experience preferred, but not required).
  • Excellent written, oral, organizational and interpersonal communication skills; desire to juggle and prioritize multiple competing work streams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented mentality (able to work independently, but enjoys teamwork), low ego, natural curiosity and desire to learn, and good sense of humor.
  • Commitment to support Plaid’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives.
  • Admitted to the California Bar in good standing, or eligible to register as in-house counsel with the California Bar.
